William "Bill" Solomon, age 91, of Detroit, MI, passed away peacefully Saturday, June 12, 2021, at his home in St. Clair Shores. Bill was born March 21, 1930 in Detroit to the late John and Mary (nee: Elian) Solomon. His parents immigrated to America from Syria in the early 1900s and settled in downtown Detroit. Bill was proud of his heritage and would always quote the great writer Khalil Gibran: "He who denies his heritage, has no heritage." He attended Miller High School before dropping out at 16. He later went back to receive his diploma at Denby High School in 1977 at the age of 47. Bill's life was dedicated to service and helping others. He enlisted into the army at 20 years old and was stationed in Austria during the Korean War. He loved his country deeply and wanted to fight for it. Later on in 1979, he fulfilled a lifelong dream of owning a store he cherished for years, the Village Wine Shop. He owned the shop for 35 years before retiring at 80. ospital for several hours a week until he could no longer help. One aspect he enjoyed was running into many familiar faces. He also had a knack for politics. Bill was a prominent supporter of the Republican Party, even campaigning as State Representative for the 12th District in 1980. Although he lost the election to a strong incumbent, Bill was not shy of displaying his beliefs, values, and ideals for all to see. Faith had a stronghold on Bill's life, and he experienced a spiritual journey. After raising his family in the Catholic faith as an Episcopalian himself, he later decided to join his family and be confirmed into the Catholic Church at age 85. He was always open to growth in all facets of life, and this was no different. In 1962 he married M. "Jean" (nee: Zedan) Solomon, the love of his life. He and Jean have two daughters: Kelly and Karrie and two grandsons: Roman and Vincent Bruno. Bill is the youngest of seven children: Anne, Catherine, Helene (George Marwick), Josephine "Jo" (Abraham George), Lillian "La" (Robert Ferschneider), and Thomas "Tee" (Mary Lou). Bill also has many cousins, nieces, nephews, in-laws, and close friends on both his and Jean's side of the family who will miss him dearly. If Bill could have one last sentiment of appreciation and gratitude, it would be to thank all of his family, friends, and supporters for their generosity and companionship throughout his life. He was truly honored to serve the community and those close to him, and it came at no cost to him at all. He could always be counted on for a helping hand, and was always willing to pick up someone when they were down. Visitation will be held from 2-8 p.m. Friday, June 18, at Chas. Verheyden, Inc.- Grosse Pointe, 16300 Mack Ave., 48230. Bill will lie instate from 9:30am until the time of his Funeral Service at 10:00am at St. Matthew Catholic Church, 6021 Whittier Ave., Detroit, MI 48224. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory can be made out to St. Matthew Catholic Church, https://www.osvhub.com/st-matthew-detroit/funds
